Idaho: credentials and scope
Idaho has contractor registration alongside separate occupational licenses, including electrical, plumbing and HVAC. A licensed trade contractor may be exempt from registration while working within that license's scope.
Registration and trade licensing are not interchangeable. Public-works licensing is another distinct requirement; identify the project and credential type before interpreting a search.
Example: For an HVAC installer doing unrelated construction, ask DOPL whether that additional work requires contractor registration.
Distinguish registration, occupational licensing and public works
- Identify whether the work is within a separately licensed electrical, plumbing or HVAC scope or involves broader construction. DOPL explains that licensed trades can have a registration exemption within their license scope.
- For work outside that trade scope, ask whether contractor registration is required. Do not extend a trade-license exemption to every service the business advertises.
- For public work, consult the separate public-works licensing guidance. Record the project type and contracting role so that the authority can answer the right question.
Example: an HVAC contractor also offers a new deck. Ask DOPL about the deck scope and registration instead of applying the HVAC exemption to unrelated construction.
