Washington L&I registers general and specialty construction contractors. Registration is distinct from the separate licensing or certification requirements for trades such as electrical and plumbing work.
L&I's registration requirements specify a $30,000 general-contractor bond or $15,000 specialty bond. Liability insurance is $200,000 public liability plus $50,000 property damage, or a $250,000 combined single limit; the page does not give specialty contractors a lower insurance minimum.
Example: For an electrical installation, check the electrical credential and relevant permit requirements rather than relying on a general contractor registration alone.
Separate contractor registration from the regulated trade work
- Find the L&I registration in the same business name as the proposal. Read whether it is general or specialty registration and review the displayed bond and insurance information without treating it as a coverage opinion.
- Ask who will undertake any electrical or plumbing work. Check those credentials separately; a general registration number is not the answer to an electrical or plumbing licensing question.
- Request current insurance evidence for the business and discuss the proposed job with the insurer. A required bond amount is neither an insurance policy nor a promise that every customer can recover that amount.
Example: a kitchen remodeler supplies an L&I registration but has not named the electrician. Keep the electrical portion open on your checklist and request that subcontractor’s credential before treating the project team as checked.
