Utah DOPL licenses general and specialty contractors. Check the classification and current credential in DOPL's verification service, then confirm local permit requirements.

DOPL announced new insurance minimums effective April 20, 2026 and updated H100 HVAC application requirements. Older fee and application summaries may omit those changes; use the current DOPL instructions for applications.

Example: An HVAC applicant should open the current H100 requirements rather than rely on a saved general-contractor checklist from before April 2026.

  1. Check the contractor’s DOPL license classification against the work, then compare the holder with the contracting name. A general or specialty label in an advertisement is not a substitute for the classification.
  2. For an HVAC application or credential question, use the current H100 guidance. DOPL’s April 2026 changes mean a checklist saved before that date may miss requirements.
  3. If applying or adding a category, build the budget from the current instructions and insurance requirements. For hiring, ask for current evidence rather than assuming that satisfying an earlier application proves today’s coverage.

Example: an installer sends a pre-April-2026 application checklist as evidence of eligibility. Ask for the issued credential and current DOPL record instead; an application checklist is not a license.
