For one credential, start with the issuer
An official verification service is the appropriate place to check a credential's current status and scope. Our state guides explain which authority to use and the limits of each type of record. A lookup tool may not provide a bulk export or contact details.
For a raw roster, look for a published export
Some agencies publish bulk files; others offer a records-request process. Check the agency's current access terms, format, fees and delivery estimate. State public-records procedures vary: do not assume a federal FOIA process or a universal price. Ask what fields and credential types the file includes before paying.
For a working contact list, evaluate the extra work
A compiled list can add normalization, matching, geography and contact enrichment. Ask how these steps are performed, what the snapshot date is and what remains unavailable. Distinguish a source-provided license number from an inferred category or enriched contact. Test the proposed filters with a preview.
Choose for your task
Use the official authority for a hiring decision. Use a documented raw export for an analysis you can reproduce. Use the list builder when you need territory selection and available contact fields. Larger website orders are typically delivered within one business day. Custom research scope and delivery timing are agreed before purchase.
Send a clear request before buying a file
Specify geography, trades, credential types, record unit, required contact fields and exclusions. Ask for the snapshot date, sample schema and any known coverage limits. Distinguish “all records in this supplied dataset” from “every contractor operating in this market.”
For a raw agency export, budget time to interpret fields and clean the file. For a compiled contact list, ask which fields are available and how corrections are handled. You can assess those outcomes without requiring a vendor to disclose proprietary collection or matching recipes.
Example: choose by the job the data must do
Illustrative example: a homeowner needs to check one bidder today; a researcher needs a repeatable historical population; a distributor needs contactable prospects in a territory. The official lookup, a documented snapshot and a filtered contact list can each be appropriate for a different task. No single source is automatically best for all three.
Before delivery, agree on the file shape and scope. After delivery, compare the schema and filters with that agreement and keep the source date. Contact information is not permission to send marketing; apply your own exclusions and outreach requirements.
