Understanding Colorado credentials
Colorado regulates electrical and plumbing credentials through DORA. General-contractor requirements are local: the Colorado Attorney General directs consumers to check with the city or county where work will occur.
A Secretary of State business registration is evidence about a business entity, not a trade license. Some ContractorRoster categories are inferred from business names; those categories do not establish that a business is qualified or currently offering the service.
Example: For a Denver remodel, check the local contractor requirements and separately verify electrical or plumbing credentials; a Colorado business registration alone does not answer either question.
Build a local check for the general contractor and a separate trade check
- Identify the city or county with authority over the job address. Ask that office about the general-contractor credential and permit requirements for the specific remodel; a Denver requirement should not be copied into another jurisdiction.
- For electrical or plumbing work, check DORA records separately and match the responsible business or person to the proposal. A Secretary of State business record is not an electrical or plumbing license.
- For covered refrigerant work, ask about the technician’s EPA Section 608 certification. That is an equipment-related federal certification, not a Colorado general-contractor license; apprentice supervision exceptions and certification types are described by EPA.
Example: for an air-conditioning replacement, ask who handles refrigerant, who handles any electrical work, and which local office issues the permit. Three different questions may require three different pieces of evidence.
