StatewideIllinois market snapshot
The contractor market in Illinois
This is our covered-source snapshot for Illinois, refreshed 2026-07-07. Counts describe records, not every contractor or unique company in the state. Census housing-unit authorizations shown here refer to 2025; they are not completed projects or all construction work.
Figures use separately generated snapshots: overall roster totals, trade counts and mapped-city counts can differ in scope and collection time and should not be added together or treated as a reconciled census. The displayed source refresh date does not date every aggregate. Population and households are sums of the covered ZIP estimates. The income indicator is a population-weighted average of ZIP-level household-income medians, not the state's household median. Census context can refer to a different period from the roster. Housing-unit authorizations refer to the displayed permit year; they are not completed projects. See the ACS estimate guidance and Building Permits Survey for the underlying statistical definitions.
This snapshot contains 12.4 records per 10,000 residents.
That is 2.9 snapshot records per 1,000 households.

Common questions about Illinois contractors
What does the Illinois roster cover?
15,797 records in our snapshot, refreshed 2026-07-07. Coverage follows the sources and trades listed here; it is not a census of every contractor or a count of unique companies. A company may hold multiple credentials.
How do I check a contractor in Illinois before hiring?
Illinois uses different authorities for different trades. IDFPR administers roofing licenses, while IDPH licenses plumbers and registers plumbing contractors. Chicago also has its own building-department credentials. Compare the official record with the business on the contract, its current status and the proposed work. Check local permits, insurance and references separately.
Which trades are available in this roster?
electricians, plumbers, general contractors, roofing contractors, masons. These are our covered categories, not a statement that each has a statewide license. Availability depends on territory and filters.
Does inclusion prove a contractor is active today?
No. The snapshot reflects source records at collection, not a live status check. Recheck the issuing authority before hiring. Missing records can reflect our coverage, source timing or search limits; they do not by themselves establish that a business is unlicensed.
How do I choose a list and delivery time?
Select a territory and review its available records and price before checkout. Contact fields vary by record. Larger website orders are typically delivered within one business day. Custom research scope and delivery timing are agreed before purchase.

Understanding Illinois credentials
Illinois uses different authorities for different trades. IDFPR administers roofing licenses, while IDPH licenses plumbers and registers plumbing contractors. Chicago also has its own building-department credentials.
Our Illinois source coverage is not a complete description of Illinois law. A Chicago general-contractor record does not establish authority in every other municipality, and plumbing is not exclusively a municipal licensing system.
Example: If a roofing company also offers plumbing, verify the roofing record with IDFPR and the plumbing credentials with IDPH rather than assuming one covers both.
Use the job location and trade to choose the Illinois check
- For roofing, start with IDFPR. For plumbing, check IDPH’s plumber licensing and plumbing-contractor registration. Do not use a Chicago general-contractor entry as a substitute for these state trade records.
- For a Chicago general contractor, the linked code lists A with no project-value cap, B up to $20 million, C up to $10 million, D up to $4 million and E up to $500,000 for regulated activity at one site. It also restricts demolition by class; E excludes demolition and excavation. Confirm the current provision with the city for the proposed work.
- For work outside Chicago, contact that municipality’s building department about the scope. Our selected Chicago records do not establish that another Illinois municipality has the same requirements.
Example: for a Chicago project whose value exceeds the holder’s class limit, ask the city to clarify the required class before accepting the bid. Splitting permits to evade the class limits is prohibited by the municipal provision linked below.
