Tennessee market snapshot

The contractor market in Tennessee

24,235Roster records

This is our covered-source snapshot for Tennessee, refreshed 2026-09-03. Counts describe records, not every contractor or unique company in the state.

Figures use separately generated snapshots: overall roster totals, trade counts and mapped-city counts can differ in scope and collection time and should not be added together or treated as a reconciled census. The displayed source refresh date does not date every aggregate. Population and households are sums of the covered ZIP estimates. The income indicator is a population-weighted average of ZIP-level household-income medians, not the state's household median. Census context can refer to a different period from the roster. Housing-unit authorizations refer to the displayed permit year; they are not completed projects. See the ACS estimate guidance and Building Permits Survey for the underlying statistical definitions.

Common questions about Tennessee contractors

What does the Tennessee roster cover?

24,235 records in our snapshot, refreshed 2026-09-03. Coverage follows the sources and trades listed here; it is not a census of every contractor or a count of unique companies. A company may hold multiple credentials.

How do I check a contractor in Tennessee before hiring?

Tennessee contractor licenses carry both a classification and a monetary limit. For projects requiring a contractor license, licensing can be required before bidding, not just before work starts. Compare the official record with the business on the contract, its current status and the proposed work. Check local permits, insurance and references separately.

Which trades are available in this roster?

electricians, plumbers, general contractors, fire-protection contractors. These are our covered categories, not a statement that each has a statewide license. Availability depends on territory and filters.

Does inclusion prove a contractor is active today?

No. The snapshot reflects source records at collection, not a live status check. Recheck the issuing authority before hiring. Missing records can reflect our coverage, source timing or search limits; they do not by themselves establish that a business is unlicensed.

How do I choose a list and delivery time?

Select a territory and review its available records and price before checkout. Contact fields vary by record. Larger website orders are typically delivered within one business day. Custom research scope and delivery timing are agreed before purchase.

Understanding Tennessee credentials

Tennessee contractor licenses carry both a classification and a monetary limit. For projects requiring a contractor license, licensing can be required before bidding, not just before work starts.

The classification defines the permitted work; the monetary limit constrains the contract amount. Tennessee's exam-waiver arrangements do not remove the application and license requirements.

Example: Before accepting a bid, compare both the project type and value with the Tennessee record instead of treating an out-of-state license as permission to proceed.

Check classification, value and bidding timing together
  1. Compare the Tennessee classification with the proposed work and the monetary limit with the proposed contract. Record both; a matching classification does not erase a limit issue.
  2. Ask the board whether a license must be in place before bidding for the project. Do not treat an application in progress or a plan to obtain the license later as an issued credential.
  3. For an out-of-state bidder, look for the Tennessee license and relevant scope. An exam waiver can help an application but does not itself supply permission to proceed.

Example: a bidder presents another state’s license and says reciprocity is available. Ask for the issued Tennessee credential or board clarification before treating the bid as authorized.
