New York contractor verification depends on locality and trade. NYC DOB issues trade licenses and general-contractor registrations; NYC DCWP separately licenses home-improvement contractors.
A NYC general-contractor registration is not a statewide general-contractor license. ContractorRoster's New York sources include selected municipal records, so a missing result is not proof that a contractor elsewhere in New York lacks a required credential.
Example: For a NYC home renovation, check whether the business needs a DCWP home-improvement license as well as the DOB credentials relevant to the work.
Distinguish NYC home-improvement licensing from DOB records
- Identify the actual municipality before searching. Our selected municipal records do not constitute a statewide New York contractor license system.
- For NYC home-improvement work, check DCWP’s home-improvement contractor requirements and the contracting business. Separately identify DOB trade licenses or registrations relevant to the proposed work.
- Ask for the credentials of the electrical or plumbing contractor where those portions are included. A DOB general-contractor registration and a DCWP home-improvement license answer different questions; neither should be renamed as the other in your notes.
Example: a Queens renovation proposal lists a general-contractor registration. Ask whether the business also needs a DCWP home-improvement license and who will perform regulated trades, instead of stopping at the first matching NYC record.
