Montana market snapshot

The contractor market in Montana

12,708Roster records

This is our covered-source snapshot for Montana, refreshed 2026-09-03. Counts describe records, not every contractor or unique company in the state.

Figures use separately generated snapshots: overall roster totals, trade counts and mapped-city counts can differ in scope and collection time and should not be added together or treated as a reconciled census. The displayed source refresh date does not date every aggregate. Population and households are sums of the covered ZIP estimates. The income indicator is a population-weighted average of ZIP-level household-income medians, not the state's household median. Census context can refer to a different period from the roster. Housing-unit authorizations refer to the displayed permit year; they are not completed projects. See the ACS estimate guidance and Building Permits Survey for the underlying statistical definitions.

Common questions about Montana contractors

What does the Montana roster cover?

12,708 records in our snapshot, refreshed 2026-09-03. Coverage follows the sources and trades listed here; it is not a census of every contractor or a count of unique companies. A company may hold multiple credentials.

How do I check a contractor in Montana before hiring?

Montana transitioned its construction-contractor registration program to a licensing program on January 1, 2026. DLI says registrations active on December 31, 2025 were converted to the new license. Compare the official record with the business on the contract, its current status and the proposed work. Check local permits, insurance and references separately.

Which trades are available in this roster?

electricians, plumbers, general contractors, fire-protection contractors. These are our covered categories, not a statement that each has a statewide license. Availability depends on territory and filters.

Does inclusion prove a contractor is active today?

No. The snapshot reflects source records at collection, not a live status check. Recheck the issuing authority before hiring. Missing records can reflect our coverage, source timing or search limits; they do not by themselves establish that a business is unlicensed.

How do I choose a list and delivery time?

Select a territory and review its available records and price before checkout. Contact fields vary by record. Larger website orders are typically delivered within one business day. Custom research scope and delivery timing are agreed before purchase.

Understanding Montana credentials

Montana transitioned its construction-contractor registration program to a licensing program on January 1, 2026. DLI says registrations active on December 31, 2025 were converted to the new license.

An Independent Contractor Exemption Certificate concerns workers' compensation status and is distinct from a construction contractor license. Statutory exemptions apply; do not use older registration-only guidance as a complete account of current requirements.

Example: If a contractor presents an old registration or an ICEC, check the current DLI licensing record and ask which exemption, if any, applies to the business.

Check the post-transition license rather than an old registration card
  1. Use DLI’s current construction-contractor licensing service. Montana converted registrations active at the end of 2025 into the new licensing program; a saved registration card is historical evidence.
  2. Identify whether the contractor is presenting a construction license or an Independent Contractor Exemption Certificate. The ICEC concerns workers’ compensation status and is not the same credential.
  3. If an exemption is claimed, ask which statutory exemption applies to the business and proposed work. Do not assume that every ICEC holder is exempt from every construction-licensing requirement.

Example: a contractor gives you only a 2025 registration and an ICEC. Look up the current construction license or ask DLI to clarify the claimed exemption before recording the licensing check as resolved.
